Mr. Kelly's Place
The Joys of My Life
A bit about me...
I am currently embarking on my 26th year of teaching, all of them within the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario. I have taught grade eight my entire career (except for a one year High School placement in 2019) at St. Mary High School and (despite the odd frustration) am quite pleased with my job. I am a graduate of Queen's University (Bachelor of Phys. Ed. and Bachelor of Arts) and also obtained my Bachelor of Education in Kingston. I take my job very seriously and I am constantly looking for means to enrich the learning environment in my classroom. It is my intention to try to be a life long learner and I want to instill this fundamental characteristic in the students I teach. I am currently enjoying the transformation of my profession and look forward to what education is going to look like in the 21st century.
At SMHS I have co-coached the elementary cross country, boys basketball and track and field teams. I also am the convener for the intramural program for the elementary wing of our school. I have served as the elementary OECTA union representative as well as being the LGESAA athletic representative. I am fortunate to work at a grade 7-12 school, however the High School is a separate entity. We do share the gymnasium, library and cafetorium , but for the most part, we do our own thing in terms of the facility. Having said that, I am currently co-coaching both the Junior Girls and Boys High School basketball teams.
After school I enjoy being a family man and I'm addicted to sports. I currently am an assistant coach with my daughter's club basketball team (Brockville Blazers). I enjoy digesting information about the Toronto Blue Jays and Raptors, but I am not particular when it comes to athletics (much to the chagrin of my wife).
I certainly am not "tech savvy", however I very much support the implementation and (proper) use of it within the classroom. I know that kids learn computer technology more easily than most adults, but as Carl Sagan once said, "We live in a society exquisitely dependent on science and technology, in which hardly anyone knows anything about science and technology." I firmly believe that the technology itself is not transformative. It’s the school and the pedagogy that is transformative, however the role I hope to give the computer is that of a carrier of cultural 'germs' or 'seeds' whose intellectual products will take root in actively growing minds. I look forward to this next chapter in my teaching career and I hope I will make ( have made) a positive impact on the students with whom I will be (have been) acquainted.
